Test Editor
Add, edit, and arrange steps in a visual test
The test editor is where you build the steps that make up a test. Open it by clicking View test (pen icon) on any non-directory row in the Tests page.
Tabs
The test details page has four tabs:
| Tab | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Steps | The step editor — add, edit, and arrange steps |
| Parameters | Define test parameters and variables |
| Latest Run | Summary and status of the most recent run for this test |
| Execution History | A log of past runs for this test |
The sections below describe the Steps tab.
Layout
The Steps tab has two panels:
- Left — step list. All steps in the test, grouped where applicable.
- Right sidebar — step form. Opens when you select a step or click Add step (+).
Adding and Editing Steps
- Click Add step (+) to open the step sidebar.
- Select an action type, fill in the fields, and confirm.
The new step is appended to the list, or inserted after the currently selected step.
To edit an existing step, click it in the list. The sidebar loads its current values. Change the fields and save.
For a full reference on every built-in action type see Built-in Steps. For custom JavaScript actions see Custom Steps.
Conditions
Each step can have a condition that controls when it runs:
| Condition | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| (none) | Step always executes |
skip | Step is never executed |
condition | Run a JavaScript expression; step executes only if it returns truthy |
element-visibility | Wait for an element to be visible (or not visible) before deciding whether to run |
element-text | Run if an element's text matches a value |
Set the condition in the step sidebar under Condition.
Grouping Steps
Steps can be organised into groups. A group appears in the list as a collapsible row containing child steps.
To create a group, select two or more steps and click Group selected steps in the toolbar. To add steps to an existing group, select them and click Move to group in the toolbar.
To move steps out of a group, click Move to group in the toolbar and choose Move to Parent Level in the dialog.
Sharing a Step
To promote a step to a shared step — a reusable component available across all tests — select it and click Share selected step in the toolbar. The step appears in the Shared Steps library; the test continues using the same step.
To insert an existing shared step, open the step sidebar and choose the Shared Steps tab.
See Shared Steps for how to create and manage the library.
Playwright Script Preview
Click the code icon in the toolbar to see the Playwright script the current steps would generate. This view is read-only and reflects the current step list including unsaved changes.
Running the Test
Click Run Locally in the toolbar to start a local run in the desktop app. See Run Tests Locally.
For cloud runs see Run Tests Remotely.
Revisions
Open the ⋯ menu in the page header and choose Revision History to open the revision panel. This lists previous revisions with their type (working, auto, or manual), version number, and creation time.
Choose Create Revision from the same menu to save a snapshot of the current state. A revision captures the steps, config, and parameters at that moment.
Clicking a revision in the panel opens the Revision View, where steps are read-only. All roles can create revisions.
Saving
Click Save Changes in the step list toolbar.
If another user saves the test between when you opened it and when you save, a conflict dialog appears. You can discard your local changes and reload, or keep editing and save again.
Navigating away with unsaved changes triggers a confirmation prompt.
